Playlist: songs about cars for gays who can't drive
Gays love to fantasize about unattainable things: like stable relationships, financial literacy, and driving.
Seven years ago, I scheduled my drivers license exam. 20 was a respectable age for a heterosexual city boy to get his New York license. I had done all the things too: the learner’s permit, the 4 hour workshop— I even scheduled my test in Staten Island for good luck! But right before my exam, something got to me.
After a grueling summer watching my mom hold that little handle in the passenger’s seat, I gave up. Instead, I packed my bags, hopped on a train to New Jersey, and saw the Backstreet Boys.
Maybe it was the exam being on the anniversary of my grandmother’s passing. Maybe it was my undiagnosed anxiety disorder. Maybe it was the *sort of* accident I got into practicing on 3rd Ave (In my defense, there is no safe place to practice driving in Brooklyn). But all of these explanations fail to see the bigger picture: I was struggling to accept my myself as a gay who can’t drive.
Gays love to fantasize about unattainable things: like stable relationships, financial literacy, and driving. This is a playlist for indulging all of those fantasies (but mostly the last one).
Enjoy!
